Professional Website Design?
September 18, 2008 at 4:32 pm | Posted in Web Site Design | Leave a commentTags: website design
If you do a search on Google for website design, Google will tell you that there are over 80 million results.
Why is this?
It is simply because it is now so easy to develop a website using a myriad of programs that are almost as easy to use as Microsoft Word.
So, anyone with time on their hands can start developing websites.
This has brought in a host of Mom-and-Pop web developers – hence the 82 million pages in Google for “website design”.
Now, I am not for one minute saying that there is not a place for these developers. There are many people and companies that cannot afford nor really need professional website design.
Professional Website Design?
What do I mean by professional website design? And, more importantly, why would you need it?
I’ll start by answering the second question first…
If you or your company need sales (or more sales), then there is a fair chance that the internet can be a primary source of new sales. That being the case, then you need a system that is designed to bring in new sales.
The fact is that over 99% of websites produce ZERO or close to zero sales. Some of the other 1% make a killing!
What is the difference?
- Professional website design, and
- Smart marketing
In this post, I am going to concentrate on the aspect of professional website design. In my next post, I will discuss smart marketing.
“Professional Website Design” is more than a cliche
Firstly, I want to quickly dispel some myths about the meaning of professional. “Professional” does not mean:
- Flashy or fancy graphics
- It will cost you the earth
- It follows a normal pattern for appearance (ie where buttons are, etc)
No. “Professional” means that it is designed for the purpose. There is a process involved. So, let’s go through this process quickly…
Firstly, you need to know the goal or purpose of the website. What are you trying to accomplish? If your purpose is to give people a good impression of your company, then go ahead and get those flashy graphics. However, if your purpose is to generate sales using the internet, then that needs to be the focus.
Secondly, you need to know your products / services and understand your market. From a sales perspective, knowing your products / services does not mean knowing the technical features. Rather, it means knowing the benefits to the customer. Understanding your market involves finding out their needs / desires, what makes them “tick”, etc. By combining your knowledge of your products / services and understanding your market, you can make a compelling sales message.
I can just about hear you thinking, “Hey, you have spent all this time, and you haven’t told me about website design”.
You are right.
I also would not start to build a bridge by getting a delivery of steel to the site.
Let’s move quickly along. We are now ready to talk about the actual site design.
If you want your website to generate sales for you, the website needs to follow professional design practices that are proven to produce sales.
I am not going to get technical here. Rather, I will tell you the principles and leave the technical details for your web design company. You can evaluate potential website developers based on these principles.
To really generate sales, the actual website needs to:
- “Talk” to the needs of the visitor, rather than describe the greatness of your company, products or services
- Promote visitors contacting your company, and make it compelling for them to do so
- Incorporate a “follow up” system that builds a relationship and trust with the visitors
- Be laid out in such a way so as to put your desired goal (ie download report, buy product) in the place where people will see and act upon it
- Use professional “sales copy” where you want people to make a purchase
It could take me hours to discuss each of these principles, so that is beyond the scope of this post. Needless to say, when evaluating website designers, make sure you get one that follows these principles.
Using these principles is a guaranteed recipe for success. You can expedite the ramp-up of sales from yoru website if you then apply “smart marketing” to promote it.
